  • Athletes’ Commission created for Tokyo 2020

    Led by Daichi Suzuki, gold medallist at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games and President of the Japan Swimming Federation, the Tokyo 2020 Athletes’ Commission will consist of 21 prominent figures from Japan’s sporting community, including five-times Paralympic medallist Junichi Kawai as Vice Chair.     Registrations have been received from more than 160 countries so far, including a large number of applicants from countries that have hosted the most recent Olympic Games, highlighting the inspirational effect that the events have had on the local population.   • IOC President pays tribute to legacy of Pierre de Coubertin

    Coubertin, who died on 2 September 1937, is buried in the Olympic Capital, where he established the IOC headquarters in 1915. By decree of his will, his heart was buried separately in Olympia, Greece. “Coubertin was a man of both vision and reform.
